NFL Flag Official League

About Us

Established in 2005 by Doug & LaNeta Roth and now being ran by Reggie Barksdale, Southern Maryland Youth Flag Football League (SMYFFL) is the largest NFL Flag co-ed youth football league in the state of Maryland and one of the largest more recognized leagues in the USA. Based in Waldorf, we serve Charles County and the surrounding areas, SMYFFL has over 1500 kids sign up annually and had 875 kids registered this Spring. Those numbers created 70 teams in 5 Divisions with 55Cheerleaders. SMYFFL is also well known in our community and employs 20 plus teenagers each season to assist in our day-to-day operations. We are a mainstay at Community and local School events such as Career Day, Senior Interviews and Field Days.
To date, we've had nearly 35 successful seasons, each providing a positive experience for many coaches, youth, and parents. SMYFFL operates Spring and Fall seasons, providing a safe football atmosphere that the kids truly enjoy.
Affiliated with the NFL Flag League, we are a coed youth organization, designed to educate young people ages 4-17 about football and cheer while emphasizing participation and sportsmanship. Football players will learn about formations, pass patterns, terminology, and different defense types, all in a safe, non-contact environment. Whether its free camps given by us or our local NFL Players having their annual free camps, it’s never a boring season at SMYFFL. Our Cheerleaders will learn chants, motions, jumps, and all the basics of sideline cheer with hopes of joining cheer competitions in our future. We also offer team bonding and team building experiences for our Cheerleaders as well as Community event involvement.
The league is open to boys and girls ages 4-17 of all skill levels.
As for our Commissioner and League Owner Reggie Barksdale. I have been a part of the league since it started in 2005 and at the helm of SMYFFL since 2017. Under my leadership, SMYFFL has grown to be a juggernaut in the world of youth sports, the annual registration has grown from 375 to over 1500 kids annually and it will only get bigger. With Partnerships/Sponsorships from companies such as Under Armour, T-Mobile, Dicks Sporting Goods, Gamebreaker, Flagship Carwash, Velocity Clinical Research, and a host of other local businesses, SMYFFL has grown to be a top-notch youth organization. Along with running SMYFFL, I also serve as Mentor for 6 other small market leagues across the USA and I have been very instrumental in their growth and development. Last year we were nominated as NFL Flag League of the Year and I was nominated as League Owner of the Year, even though we did not bring home the awards, the smile on the kids’ faces and the response that I get from my community year after year makes me a winner.
